Ray Mallon, who earned
the nick-name "Robocop" during his police career with
Cleveland police because of his zero-tolerance approach to crime
and unruly behaviour, encourages police officers to kick down
doors and root out criminals, saying "criminals do not play
by the Queensbury rules". His comments come as Conservative
leader Michael Howard visits Middlesbrough on Tuesday to outline
his party's strategy for law and order. The Tories would recruit
40,000 extra officers, back zero tolerance policing, build more
prisons and "stand up for the silent, law-abiding majority".
He also lambasts feckless fathers who refuse responsibility for
their children. The Robocop analogy was irresistible.
