The in-flight catering
company Gate Gourmet which supplies British Airways, having sacked
300+ predominantly Sikh workers at their plant at Heathrow, are
determined to stick to their guns, going into administration if
necessary. The strike is illegal, but strikers are claiming that
they are being replaced by part time workers on low pay. This
is the result of a tighter contract with Gate Gourmet demanded
by BA several years ago in response to the downturn in the aviation
industry. Gate has been losing money because of this, and so is
now determined to pass this on to the workers, already on low
pay. BA is not helping, by its reluctance to re-negotiate the
contract. They both seem to be determined to make mince meat of
the workforce.
