The UN Security Council
attempts to hammer out a draft resolution on the fighting in southern
Lebanon. The main protagonists are Chirac and Bush. Apparently
the French demanded a "complete ceasefire" - largely
because any UN peace keeping force will consist primarily of French
troops. Bush's boys are seeking a "suspension of fire",
preferring to go for a sustainable solution before demanding the
complete ceasefire. Blair is the intermediary in this and a compromise
statement is issued demanding a "cessation of hostilities".
Everyone pats each other on the back and toasts diplomacy. As
the fighting and bloodshed goes on unabated, the supreme achievement
of this agreed wording is appreciated only by diplomats and pedants.
