US carmakers GM and Chrysler ask the US government for another $21bn to shore up their ailing businesses, in addition to the $17bn already received. Job cuts and plant closures are planned. Loss of these giants is unthinkable to the American mind and to the American workforce - and economy in general - if knock-on effects are included. Will Obama keep pumping money into this rusty old industry? There seems little choice.
