himself forward to be named the first president of the European
Council. Meanwhile, an "Old Europe" rival throws his
hat into the ring and support for Blair is equivocal to say the
least. Italy appears to backtrack on earlier support; Sarko can't
seem to make up his mnd and Merkel is having none of it. The
Beauty pageant goes on, while nobody watches.
