The "first past the post" voting system could be scrapped if Labour wins the general election, under plans outlined by Gordon Brown. Why? Well, it's schmoozing time. The polls are very tight and all of a sudden little Cleggy is everyone's paramour. Panicking over a potentially hung parliament in May, Brown promises Clegg a referendum on changing to an "alternative vote" system, where candidates are ranked in order of voters' preference. This is not quite what he Lib Dems want, but close. A referendum could be held by the autumn of 2011 if the idea is approved.
